TMJ stands for Temporomandibular Joint

Here is the technical explanation of these joints and how they work. Basically. you have two temporomandibular joints, one on both sides of your face (just in front of your ears). These hinge-like joints connect your lower jaw (called the mandible) to your skull (temporal bone) allowing you to perform the following actions:

  • Open and close your mouth
  • Chew
  • Speak
  • Yawn and swallow
  • Move your jaw from side to side

When these joints work as they should, movement is normally smooth and pain free. When they don't function normally, it can be a source of constant discomfort and frustration for the individual.

WHAT IS TMD?

TMD stands for Temporomandibular Dysfunction and it affects the normal function of:

  • The joint itself
  • Cartilage disc inside the joint
  • Surrounding muscles
  • Supporting ligaments

The terms “TMJ” and “TMD” are often used interchangeably.

TMD can be:

  • Short-term (acute)
  • Long-term (chronic)
  • Progressive (if left untreated)

What Are The Common Symptoms

When our patients first come to us, many of them have been experiencing symptoms for years before finding out they are in fact TMJ related.Typical symptoms can include:

  • Jaw pain or tenderness in the jaw
  • Grating, clicking or popping sounds
  • Headaches (often mistaken for migraines)
  • Ear pain without infection
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Difficulty opening the mouth fully
  • Jaw locking open or closed
  • Facial fatigue or tightness
  • Changes in the way teeth fit together

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms there's a good probability they are TMJ related. The good news is that help is available.
