Our Approach To TMJ Treatment
A Structured, Whole-Person Approach to TMJ & Bruxism
Patients who come to us for TMJ Dysfunction and bruxism treatment are typically experiencing jaw pain, headaches or other related symptoms. In many instances, they have previously been given solutions that tackle the surface issue only.
Dr. Philip Christie's approach in our TMJ Clinic is uniquely different. We have a wealth of experience treating patients with ongoing symptoms of Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD) and bruxism (clenching and grinding). It's important to understand that these symptoms are not just mechanical issues. They often involve a combination of joint function, muscle activity and bite balance and, in a good deal of cases, patterns of underlying stress. Because of these factors our treatment is structured to examine both the root causes and the effect of the condition on the patient.
Why a Different Approach Is Required
The jaw is designed to handle relatively light forces that are needed in activities such as chewing, yawning, speaking and making facial expressions.
With bruxism, the forces generated can exceed that of normal function. These excessive forces can put a strain on the jaw joints, cause muscle fatigue, contribute to headaches and even wear and tear on the teeth.
Patients are often completely unaware that this habit is happening. Because of this, simply treating symptoms without thorough diagnosis factoring in the underlying drivers may only provide a temporary relief solution.
What is Bruxism?
Bruxism is a term used to describe the habit of clenching or grinding the teeth. It often happens whilst sleeping, times of deep concentration or as a response to stress. Because people with bruxism are unaware of their habits, it's not something that can be instantly changed.

What Role Does Stress Play?
In many cases, The behavioural patterns of bruxism are often deeply ingrained and, in many cases, are the response to stress.
An important part of our strategic approach is recognising the role of stress and internal tension.
For some people, clenching and grinding may serve as a kind of physical outlet for either emotional or mental stress. This response doesn't mean that there is anything “wrong” with the individual. It simply reflects how the body adapts when stress is not easily expressed.
Many of our patients are surprised to learn how closely jaw tension can be linked to daily pressures of living. Emotional tension or already deeply ingrained habits can be an underlying contributory factor to the symptoms.
Understanding this connection is an important step in addressing the condition at its source.
Tissue Preservation
One of our most important treatment priorities is to protect the teeth, gums, and jaw joints from excessive force. We typically do this by providing our patient with a custom made night guard appliance designed to fit precisely over the patient's teeth and gums. The guard acts as a shock absorber, helping to reduce pressure on the joints. It also helps to allow the muscles to relax and protect the patient's teeth from wear or fracture
However, it is important to understand that the appliance is designed to protect the tissues. It won't eliminate the habit itself. Understanding this is essential for management in the long term.
Restoring Proper Bite Function
In some cases, the way the teeth meet (the bite) can contribute to joint strain. Where appropriate, a careful adjustment of the bite may be carried out to create a more balanced and stable alignment. This can help to reduce uneven pressure. improve jaw movement and support the effectiveness of the custom night guard.
Addressing the Underlying Pattern
While protecting the tissues is crucially important, improvement for the long term may also involve identifying and tackling the core reasons behind the habit. This often includes developing an awareness of stress patterns (and triggers), tension in the muscles and behavioural response.
For some patients, this may involve embracing stress management strategies, learning to recognise the build up of tension early and creating healthier outlets for pressure. This aspect of care is approached by our TMJ Clinic dentist in a supportive and practical way with a strong focus and awareness of each individual’s uniqueness.
Our Unique Personal Approach
Because no two cases of TMJ dysfunction are alike, treatment is tailored to the individual patient and the symptoms they are experiencing. Treatment may involve a combination of:
- Joint and muscle assessment
- Bite evaluation
- Protective therapy (in the form of a custom made mouth shield)
- Ongoing review and adjustment
The goal is to create a balanced improvement in symptoms that is sustainable into the future.
